CPSC Warns Of Hazards Associated With CB Antennas

WASHINGTON, D.C. (Dec. 23) -- Do-it-yourself installation of base station citizen band(CB) antennas can have tragic consequences, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission today warned.

Ninety-two(92) deaths and 156 injuries associated with CB antennas mounted alongside private dwellings on masts or towers have been reported to the Commission over the last year. Most of these accidents occurred when the antenna, while being installed or taken down, came in contact with power lines. More often than not, the accident involves an injury (or death) to more than one person.

Due to the anticipated large number of sales of CB equipment during the holiday season and the introduction January 1, 1977 of 40-channel CB's, the Commission urges consumers to take these precautions in the installation and removal of base station antennas:

- Avoid putting antennas up ANYWHERE in the vicinity of power lines. If this cannot be avoided, contact the power company in advance for further instructions.

- Tie-off the antenna with a rope so that in the event it should fall during installation or removal it will not touch the power lines.

The Commission strongly recommends that before attempting installation or removal to consult with experienced persons or the local power company.
