North Carolina Firm Recalls Pork Products For Possible Contamination With PlasticWASHINGTON, July 20, 2002--Smithfield Packing Company, a Tar Heel, N.C., firm, is voluntarily recalling approximately 19,800 pounds of fresh pork neckbones for possible contamination with plastic, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service announced today. The products being recalled are 2-4 lb. styrofoam trays of "PREMIUM SMITHFIELD PORK, PORK NECKBONES." The side of each tray bears a ten digit code starting with "1962," "1972," or "1982" and the establishment code "EST. 18079" inside the USDA seal of inspection. The products were produced July 15-17, 2002, and distributed to retail stores and military commissaries in Alabama, the District of Columbia, Florida, Georgia, Maine, Mississippi, North Carolina, New York, Pennsylvania, South Carolina and Virginia. "Because of the potential for injury, we want consumers to be aware of the recall," said William J. Hudnall, acting FSIS administrator. "We urge consumers to return the product to the point of purchase." The problem was discovered by Smithfield Packing Company. FSIS has received no reports of injury associated with this product.
