CPSC, Other Federal Agencies Announce New Consumer Web SiteWASHINGTON, D.C. - Not sure where to turn to find out what toys are safe for your child this holiday season? Wonder if your car has been recalled? Want information on the safety of the food you eat? Consumers now have a "one-stop" web site to access multiple federal consumer information resources.Located at www.consumer.gov, the U.S. Consumer Gateway offers information by subject categories instead of by federal agency. Consumers no longer have to determine which agency is responsible for the subject for which they are searching. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), the Federal Trade Commission, the Food and Drug Administration, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, and the Securities and Exchange Commission all contribute information to the Consumer Gateway web site and provide links back to their agency's own web sites. The Gateway is divided into 10 major categories, including "Product Safety," "Your Home," "Children," "Food," "Health," "Your Money" and "Transportation." In addition, the "Of Special Interest" section highlights the latest news of consumer interest. Another section, "Scam Alert" gives tips on recognizing and avoiding fraudulent and deceptive practices in the marketplace. The web site is a cooperative effort among the participating federal agencies. The initiative to develop the Gateway was led by the Federal Trade Commission's Bureau of Consumer Protection, which maintains the site and provides technical support. |
