In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product SafetyCommission (CPSC), five importers are recalling about 845,000 novelty anddisposable cigarette lighters. The lighters either do not havechild-resistant mechanisms to prevent young children from igniting thelighters or they have defective child-resistant mechanisms in violation ofthe Consumer Product Safety Act.

In cooperation with the U.S. ConsumerProduct Safety Commission (CPSC), Charles Komar & Sons Inc.of New York, N.Y., is recalling about 6,800 fleece robesand lounge sets for women. The fabric, which fails to meetfederal mandatory standards for fabric flammability, couldignite readily and presents a serious risk of burn injuriesin violation of the federal Flammable Fabrics Act. Fabricsthat do not comply with the standard typically burn fasterthan newspaper.

In cooperation with the U.S. ConsumerProduct Safety Commission (CPSC), Evenflo Company Inc., of Piqua, Ohio, isoffering free hinge cover kits to all 1.2 million owners of its portableplay yards sold under the Happy Camper, Happy Cabana and Kiddie Campermodel names. If the hinges on the product are not fully rotated, theproduct can collapse, possibly trapping the child in the "V" formed by thefolded top rails. Additionally, if leaned or sat upon, the rotatingplastic hinges in the middle of the folding top rails can crack or break,presenting a sharp edge or possibly allowing the child toescape.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product SafetyCommission (CPSC), C & T International Inc. of Palisades Park, N.J., isrecalling about 800 full-size wooden baby cribs to repair their siderails. The side rails can loosen and separate, creating a space greaterthan 2-3/8 inches between the slats. Babies could be strangled if theirheads become entrapped between the slats. In addition, babies could beseriously injured if they fall out of the crib.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product SafetyCommission (CPSC), The Werner Ladder Company in conjunctionwith the Kentucky Ladder Company is recalling about 400 Space Mastersliding attic ladders. When in use, the ladder can slide down from theattic and then slide back up for storage. The ladder has a simple metalhook to lock the ladder in the stored position. On some ladders, thehook/lock was attached upside down, which could result in the ladder notbeing properly secured in the storage position. The ladder could becomedislodged, slide down, and injure someone.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product SafetyCommission (CPSC), Klutz Inc. of Palo Alto, Calif., isoffering to replace the Chinese jump ropes sold with about 66,000children's activity books by Anne Akers Johnson entitled "Chinese JumpRope," distributed by Klutz. The ends of the elasticized ropes are joinedtogether by metal crimps that may fail in use. Children using the ropes orstanding nearby can be hit by an end of the rope as it snapsback.
