The U.S. Consumer Product SafetyCommission (CPSC) and The Black & Decker Corp. announcedtoday the resolution of CPSC's administrative Complaintagainst Black & Decker and an improved nationwide recall ofthe Spacemaker Optima Model T1000 Type 1 HorizontalToasters. In its Complaint, CPSC alleged that Black &Decker's unilateral recall announcement of October 27, 1997,did not go far enough in notifying the public of the recallor the potential fire hazard associated with the toasters,and the consumer remedy was not adequate. In its Answer,Black & Decker denied the allegations contained in theadministrative Complaint. After the Complaint and Answerwere filed, CPSC and Black & Decker began workingcooperatively to modify and improve Black & Decker'soriginal recall program.

In cooperation with the U.S. ConsumerProduct Safety Commission (CPSC), General Electric Co.'s GELighting division of Cleveland, Ohio, is recalling about50,000 outlet converters, also known as current taps. Theyconvert a single electrical outlet into three outlets. Theground connector receptacles are oversized and can causeloose ground contacts. Without grounding, consumers areexposed to serious shock hazards.

In cooperation with the U.S. ConsumerProduct Safety Commission (CPSC), ERA Intermarketing Co.Inc. of City of Industry, Calif., is recalling about 840,000Elite-2 disposable cigarette lighters. The lighters do notmeet the 1994 requirement for child-resistant mechanisms inviolation of the Consumer Product Safety Act. This actrequires amechanism on disposable and novelty lighters shownto prevent ignition of the lighters by most children under 5years old. Each year, CPSC estimates 190 deaths are causedby children under 5 years old playing with lighters.

The key rings contain ethylene glycol,commonly found in antifreeze, that could leak. Ethyleneglycol can poison young children if swallowed.

In cooperation with the U.S. ConsumerProduct Safety Commission (CPSC), Atico International USA,Inc., of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., is recalling about 329,000Halloween Floating Eyeballs and about 100,000 Smiley FaceFloating Balls. These balls contain kerosene. If the ballcracks or breaks, kerosene leaking out could poison youngchildren if swallowed. The smaller of these balls alsopresent a serious choking hazard to young children. Theylack warning labels required for small balls.

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer ProductSafety Commission (CPSC), Honeywell Consumer Products, ofSouthborough, Mass., is recalling about 1.6 million heaters soldunder the Duracraft brand name, about 8,000 heaters sold underthe DeLonghi brand name and 150,000 humidifiers sold under theDuracraft and Honeywell brand names in the United States andCanada. The heaters and humidifiers can overheat, presenting afire hazard.

When an electrical short occurs, therechargeable battery can cause the monitor's "parent" unit tosmoke and flame.
